From Ocean Inspiration to Energy Innovation

A step-by-step journey from concept towards commercial demonstration, driven by a clear mission to help redefine renewable energy.

Laying the Foundation

Founder Lee Walton built a successful renewable energy business, culminating in a strategic exit to a major German energy company in 2016. This milestone sparked a deeper ambition to address the sector’s bigger challenges.

2009–2016

The Spark of an Idea

Living by the sea, Lee saw the ocean’s potential to deliver consistent, predictable energy — unlike many other renewables. The initial concept took shape: harness tidal movement for dependable, clean power. Basic principles were identified, and the fundamental idea began to crystallise.

2017

From Concept to Reality

The practical applications became clearer as Lee developed a vision for real-world implementation. By 2018, a simple early version was built to test if the core principle actually worked — and it did. This proved the concept could convert vertical tidal energy into rotational energy for electricity generation.

2017-2018

Engineering the Breakthrough

Over the next five years, Lee worked relentlessly to refine the design and overcome technical challenges. Components were integrated and tested extensively, with the technology evolving from rudimentary prototypes to increasingly sophisticated systems. The breakthrough came in 2023, when a design solution finally resolved the persistent technical issues.

2018–2023

The Launch

HydroFlow Energy Ltd was officially incorporated in April, with full technical drawings, calculations, and component specifications prepared.

By June, the MVP performed in line with our testing objectives, demonstrating the core principle and successful energy conversion across more than 50 test cycles.

2024

Building Momentum

The design was further refined and plans developed for both an 80kW prototype and a 1MW commercial unit. HydroFlow secured a dedicated development site at Ramsgate Harbour and engaged with leading industry bodies including Innovate UK and ORE Catapult. Research collaborations began with key universities, strategic investment was secured from high-net-worth individuals.
